'FIELDS OF WAR' ACCLAIMED AS MILITARY HISTORY AND TOUR GUIDE

Arlington Heights, IL (October 3, 2010) -- Fields of War: Fifty Key Battlefields in France and Belgium, by Robert Mueller, has been selected by the Military Writers Society of America as the 2010 Bronze Medal winner in the travel category. This is the thrid national book award received by Mr. Mueller, having earlier been awarded First Place in the Travel Category of the Reader Views Reviewers Choice Award 2010 and earlier named a Best Books Award Finalist by USA Book News.

For 600 years England, France, and Germany fought for European supremacy in an area that is now northern France and Belgium. Author Robert Mueller describes the battles fought in the First World War, Second World War, and several previous wars dating back to medieval times. Many of the battlefields remain essentially undisturbed, still displaying the remains of fortifications, trenches, foxholes, and other evidence of warfare.

Written as a tour guide, Fields of War includes 65 maps and 48 pages of photos of ruins, monuments, museums, and cemeteries. All fifty battlefields are within driving distance of Paris. Visitors are guided to major landmarks and artifacts and through the scenic countryside and historic villages of France and Belgium.

The book also notes the causes, the aftermath, and the consequences of the wars within the region. Each chapter begins with a summary of the political and military events related to the conflicts, each commander’s objectives and troop movements, and the significance of each battle. Other history books are recommended for anyone interesting in expanding their knowledge of the events.

"My goal was to provide readers with the answers to the questions that I had when I visited the sites," says author Mueller, who spend five years touring and researching the battlefields. “I present the information in a simple and readable style and included photographs for readers who can’t make the trip or can’t visit every site."
